Digital Energy Systems

ET-MI-248

Over deze minor

The Digital Energy Systems (DES) minor presents the students with a comprehensive insight into the fundamentals of electrical energy systems design, operation, and structural organization. This DES Minor program aims to enable students to reflect on how they can leverage their expertise (i.e., their major program) towards resolving some of the technical challenges foreseen in future electrical energy systems. Additionally, while we move towards a digital society, the energy sector moves towards digitalization of the energy infrastructure. Digital technologies are set to make energy systems around the world more connected, intelligent, efficient, reliable, and sustainable. To achieve this, future engineers will need to possess enough digital skills to understand how AI can be used to overcome some of the foreseen technical challenges. By completing this DES Minor, students should be able to learn how to apply (basic) AI techniques to energy systems applications and problems.

Leerresultaten

Students of this DES minor programme will obtain the following learning objectives:

  • Explain energy systems organizational structure and the variable usage (generation, transport, consumption, storage) of energy.
  • Analysis of the performance of sustainable energy systems.
  • Design of resilient digital energy system architectures.
  • Design of data-driven solutions for energy systems applications and problems

Goed om te weten

Registration for this thematic minor is on a first-come, first-served basis and available places. (No lottery draw).

The DES minor is intended for students who have successfully completed the second year of a BSc program at TU Delft or equivalent level at other universities.

Expected prior Knowledge: Mathematics (numerical analysis, linear algebra, complex numbers, calculus), elementary physics, basic principles of circuit theory, electronic circuits, and programming (e.g. Matlab/Python).

Student at Leiden University, TU Delft or Erasmus University Rotterdam?
The DES Minor is also open to students from Erasmus University Rotterdam and Leiden University with sufficient background in undergraduate-level background in mathematics, physics and programming. The DES minor is not aimed at HBO students.

Onderwijsmethode en toetsing

Teaching: The DES minor offers a set of theoretical and project based courses that allow the students to learn from the scratch, exercise, and apply the acquired knowledge in near-real-world problems, as well as to develop practical skills in a multidisciplinary context.

Examination: (written, digital, oral, regular quizzes, projects). All courses and projects of the DES minor are assessed separately, and the minimum passing grade for each one is 6. The minor is successfully done if all passed courses jointly yield 30 ECTs.
