Re-imagining Tomorrow through Arts & Sciences

MINUC004Interdisciplinair

This minor is the manifestation of a new educational form across and beyond artistic and academic disciplines offered by the Rotterdam Arts and Sciences Lab (RASL) since 2019. In this minor, you develop collaborative transdisciplinary ways of working applied to a context outside of the academy and university, using what you have learned so far in your studies and in other learning environments to merge with the knowledges of your fellow students and others. Participating students come from a wide variety of studies such as composition, jazz vocals, graphic, audiovisual and spatial design, arts and culture studies, political science, psychology, industrial design, history and philosophy. Through engagement with practices of re-imagining tomorrow, we situate the minor in a broader societal context of ecological devastation and historically shaped injustices, which demand the imagining and enacting of alternative futures. Each year, we contribute to an existing project or initiative that aims to re-imagine tomorrow in a radical way, by re-considering and re-making how we learn about and approach the particular issue at hand. This year, we will contribute to the Zoöp initiative. During classes as well as in your own project you will participate in a range of different activities, such as field research, practice-led workshops, screenings, close-listening and close-reading sessions.

The minor is suitable for open-minded, engaged and critical students, who feel an urgency to work beyond disciplines and are keento actively partake in shaping, and reflecting on, their learning process. The programme requires a flexible attitude towards education and what it means to do research beyond academia.

Goed om te weten

The minor takes place at the RASL spaces at Hillevliet 90 in Rotterdam. The location is easily accessible with public transport.

The minor is divided into two parts (15 EC + 15 EC). Students can either participate in Part I or in both parts. It is not possible to only participate in Part II.

The RASL minor calls into question the centrality of the individual learning subject in western higher education. We challenge you to find approaches and forms which disrupt the individual vs. collective binary, which reimagine what collaboration means, and which trouble normative understandings of knowledge production. Therefore,we ask for a committed attitude, an open mind and that you listen carefully and treat your fellow students, tutors and external partners with respect. In addition, the minor is an intensive programme and revolves around self-directed learning, which means that you are responsible for your own learning journey, and you have to take an active approach in what and how you want to learn.

Onderwijsmethode en toetsing

During the minor, the teams decide how, where and when they would like to work together. In addition, the programme consists of a diversity of activities: (guest) lectures, workshops, seminars, and tutor meetings.
In the first weeks of the minor, students engage in a collaborative pressure cooker project with a learning experience design as outcome. After this, students make teams to work for the rest of the minor. The project teams conclude their collaborative trajectory with a final presentation accompanied by a publication, on the topic of their collaborative project. In addition, each team documents and reflects on the research process in the portfolio, where space is also made for individual contributions.

Teaching materials:
The teaching materials cover a wide range of disciplines, genres and forms: ranging from academic and artistic texts, works of art, case studies/best practices from any related field, and so on. Because the specific topic of the collaborative project is selected by the students, many of the materials are decided upon throughout the process, and recommended by tutors, guest lecturers and students alike.

Composition of final grade :

  • Learning Experience (20%)
  • Portfolio (20%)
  • Presentation and publication (50%)
  • Professional Behaviour (10%)
