Analytical chemistry plays a key role in numerous areas of life sciences, including the assessment of food safety, studies of food metabolism or agricultural production, but also in areas such as food waste reduction, clinical chemistry and biomedical technology. Current trends are the use of analytical techniques that provide improved chemical, spatial and temporal resolution, next to methods that allow the analysis of intact systems in a non-invasive manner. Finally, recent developments in the area of miniaturization and automation have significantly enhanced the ability to perform on-site analysis.
This course offers an advanced exploration of (bio)analytical chemistry, focusing on innovative methodologies and their practical applications. Building on the foundations established in ABC, students will students will deepen their understanding of state-of-the-art techniques through a combination of theoretical lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions. It is highly recommended to follow both courses in sequence - and ABC is mandatory for ABC2.
The practical experiences will follow advanced lecture and include i) rapid detection of contaminants with Paper Spray Mass Spectrometry, ii) mass Spectrometry Imaging for in situ visualization of food metabolites; iii) rapid prototyping of on-site analytical devices for small organic contaminants. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to perform the fourth experiment at the Unilever Foods Innovation Center, gaining hands-on experience and exploring the real-world applications of analytical methodologies in a working environment, such as that of a food company. Special attention will be given to integrating the principles of green chemistry to enhance the sustainability of analytical methodologies.
In ABC students develop a protocol for an experimental procedure that will be executed in ABC2. Student will thus co-create the experiments, and report about their approach and findings.

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- Understand the principles and applications of advanced analytical techniques
- Design strategies to deal with a complex analytical problem and execute it
- Apply advanced analytical techniques to analyse compounds in food
- Evaluate and discuss the developed experimental procedure and findings
