Over deze cursus
From academic year 2025-2026 this course is scheduled in Quartile 1, Timeslot B
This course provides students with advanced experience in performing quantitative research, and consists of an individual assignment, group assignments and lectures. For the individual assignment, students will write a reflection report on their experience as participant in scientific research in the domain of Psychology and Technology.
For the group assignments, students will conduct a quantitative study in the domain of Psychology and Technology in groups of 4-5 students. Students will design, execute, analyze and report on a close replication of an experimental (laboratory) study or field study employing experience sampling. There will be several short tutor sessions during which each group can discuss their research plan, progress, and results. During the group assignments, special attention will be given to the process.
There will be a series of short lectures in which the students will receive instructions and hands-on examples regarding various crucial steps in quantitative research. Moreover, we will briefly discuss the importance of replication research for cumulative science.
Leerresultaten
During the course, students will learn how to conduct, analyze and report scientific research employing quantitative research methods in the domain of Psychology and Technology. After successful completion of the course, the student:
- Is able to explain the basic principles and practices of quantitative research methods (in particular experiments and/or field assessments using experiencing sampling), including the merits and challenges of these techniques
- Can report on the importance of cumulative scientific research, and the function of replication studies
- Is able to set up and conduct a (close) replication study in the domain of P&T, employing an experimental manipulation in the laboratory or employing experience sampling in the field (under supervision)
- Can apply rules related to the ethics of psychological / user research
- Is able to analyze quantitative data to test theoretical predictions in the domain of P&T by means of statistical analyses (under supervision)
- Is able to present his/her empirical research employing quantitative research methods in an oral and written report using APA style
- Is able to reflect upon his or her experience as participant and on the goal, design, and procedure of the studies in which he or she has participated in.
- Is able to reflect upon his or her role as quantitative researcher in the process of data collection and analysis, and on the strengths and weaknesses of their empirical studies employing quantitative research methods
