About this course

This course introduces concepts, principles and methods for the planning and design of sustainable, resource efficient urban environments in the context of climate adaptation and mitigation. The mix of concepts, case studies, tutorials and assignments offered in this course provides students with theoretical and practical understanding of the key issues that urban planners and infrastructure managers are facing when developing sustainable urban communities.
The course is built around real world planning challenges for climate adaptation and mitigations and brings together urban planning, urban design and resource management. The course is facilitated through lectures, tutorials and peer review sessions. The course is set up around the analysis of real cases during the lectures and tutorials, a group assignment on a real case and and exam.

In the group assignment students work on a real case study within the context of climate adaptation and mitigation. The students are asked to create a new urban design that integrates the local conditions and context with the input of local stakeholders . Here students apply the methods and tools introduced in the lectures and tutorials, like the identification of urban narratives, making and inventory of the physical scope, stakeholder analysis, spatial multi criteria analysis, and implementation strategy creation. The students will learn and use digital tools (e.g. GIS) to perform these analyses. By using these tools the spatial and institutional context of the case at hand as well as stakeholder input can be combined to motivate their design for a climate proof urban area. This group assignment enables students to apply concepts of integrated systems for energy, water and nutrients, whilst taking into consideration the specific circumstances and requirements of stakeholders of the case at hand.

Learning outcomes

  • Analyse the urban planning structures and narratives of a neighborhood/city and identify how this may influence current and future (challenges) design choices using digital tools (GIS etc.)

  • Create an urban plan/design for a defined urban area to solve (current and future) challenges for a specific goal (climate adaptation/mitigation)

  • Integrate and facilitate the views and preferences of different stakeholders into the urban plan/design

  • Develop an implementation strategy for an urban design/plan suitable for the local urban area/context

Assessment method

  • Written test with closed questions (40%) Exam in Ans
  • Assignment design (60%) Project report including a design strategy and stakeholder reflection (Final Poster 10%)
