Within certain limits, animals can compensate environmental stress and changes in the environment (homeostasis). Homeostasis is the basis of the adaptive capacity of an individual. The amount and the predictability of stress determine how much adaptive capacity is used to survive, and what is available for health, disease resistance, welfare, and (re)production. This is true both for abiotic as well as biotic loads of an individual. This introduction course deals with the various mechanisms through which environmental factors influence the animal (as far as known), and the consequences of the effects on (infectious) disease resistance, and the capacity to (re)produce. The effects of environmental factors (temperature, light, dust, air and climate) and their effects on homeotherm animals will be discussed. This should contribute to obtain knowledge on the basal demands of animals. This course is based on the disciplines of immunology, environmental physiology and thermoregulation of animals as parameters of health, welfare and production.

This course gives detailed information on function, metabolism, homeostasis, requirements, responses and sources of nutrients for animals. Laboratory practicals will involve principles of diet formulation and diet processing. The course is taught by several 'in-house' ANU-teachers, but also guest lecturers are invited. Lectures and practicals (both laboratory and experimental) will be part of the program. The course leaders aim to enhance a general understanding of the principles in animal nutrition.  
Some of the course activities include working with living animals. Procedures and activities have been approved by National and local Ethical Committees (EC's), prior to the start of this course. We regard the use of animals in research and teaching as a privilege, not a right. Animals are only used in teaching if, after considering alternatives, it is necessary for students to achieve their learning objectives. The EC's ensure that all animals are treated humanely and not subjected to unnecessary or excessive pain, distress, or discomfort. During the activities, ethical considerations are discussed with students.

Principles of Animal Nutrition

Animal health is important for sustainable animal production, as well as for companion animals, zoo animals, and wild animals. Besides impacting the animal itself, animal diseases may also pose risks to the health of humans and the environment and have serious economic consequences. During this introductory course we will focus on the health of animals at a population level, and place that in an economic context to support animal health decision making. The overall aim of the course is to introduce and apply epidemiological and economic concepts and methods to prevent, control, and eradicate diseases in animal populations. Specific attention will be paid to 1) concepts of health and disease, 2) causality and measures of disease occurrence, 3) the types, design, and analysis of epidemiological studies, 4) diagnosing animal diseases, and 5) basic economic principles and methods used in decision making regarding animal health. The course will give students basic epidemiological and economic knowledge to understand and design studies to prevent, control and eradicate diseases in animal populations.

Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics

The course introduces the field of animal sciences and highlights the diversity of animal sciences across three main axes: 1. disciplines and associated methods, 2. species and animal groups, and 3. levels of study. Disciplines include for example animal genetics, nutrition and ethology, as well as the role of animals in circular food systems and wildlife conservation. Methods of investigation include for example techniques to study animal behaviour and welfare or techniques to identify various immune cells in blood. The course covers various vertebrate and invertebrate species including mammals, birds, fish and squids, as well as different groups of animals including farm, companion, laboratory and wild animals. The levels of study range from the cell, to an individual animal, to an entire eco- or food-system. The course is divided into three focus areas: 1 - animal behaviour and ecology; 2 - animal production and sustainability; 3 - animal health.

Introduction to Animal Sciences

The focus of Animal Sciences is on animals that are kept by humans for specific reasons, such as for food production, companionship, education, sports, etc. The general aim of Animal Sciences is to study and optimize the functioning of animals with respect to their health and welfare, their function for humans and their impact on environment and society. Courses in Animal Sciences typically deal with farm animals, companion animals, zoo animals and various other groups of animals, including aquatic animals at an 'over-species' level. This BSc minor provides an introduction to the broad field of Animal Sciences as well as comprehensive knowledge in the Animal Sciences disciplines Epidemiology, Adaptation Physiology and Nutrition. This BSc minor is a programme minor.
