About this minor

In this intensive minor you work on typic sub-structures used in civil engineering on a laboratory scale. You will learn about the materials and constructive properties of new and recycled building materials. For example concrete, steel, asphalt, dynamic interaction between train and rails, and failure mechanisms of thin-walled structures. You will work together with a group of students with different backgrounds to come up with solutions, analyze these, and then build and test them in the lab. Workshops and lectures provide the necessary theory and background information. Learning about the different civil engineering fields will help you to put what you have learned into context. Important goals are to learn about construction materials, improve your experimental skills, gain experience of construction disciplines and learn how to work in a group and report on experimental work.

Learning outcomes

In Bend and Break you learn about construction and building materials, and how to design and analyse structures. You build and test your own samples. You experience whether your design and materials behave just as you expected, or if they show less predictable behaviour. This is the kind of experience you need to make responsible decisions in your professional career.
