Becoming a Teacher Basics

About this course

This course is part of the Minor/Module Education and is integrated with an internship at a school. The course focuses on basic teaching and communication skills that prepare students for their first lessons as an intern at a secondary school. Students learn how to prepare lessons which they perform for their fellow students. After each presentation or lesson, feedback is provided by both the teacher and the fellow students. During the course students will write a POP (Personal Development Plan), in which they reflect on their starting competences as a teacher.
NB: this course is part of the Minor Education and is integrated with an internship at a school. Note that if you are interested, you can contact the coordination team of the minor (via minor.educatie@wur.nl) well in advance of the actual start of the minor, so that the internship can be organized. Deadline for application for semester I is April 1st, deadline for application for semester II is October 1st

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:

  • Prepare and execute lessons to fellow students
  • Exchange constructive feedback with fellow students
  • Reflect on their teaching competences (as described by law)
  • Formulate concrete learning goals related to their internships

Prior knowledge

Assumed Knowledge:
Becoming a Teacher Basic is the first part of the BSc Minor Education. At the same time you start your internship at a secondary school. This internship is mandatory in order to follow this course.
