Environmental Data Collection and Analysis

YWU30806

About this course

A broad range of research methods exists in the field of environmental research. These methods are operational at different spatial and temporal scales. This course focuses on the background and application of some selected research methods that are relevant in the domain of environmental research. The first part of the course (weeks1-3) deals with basic statistics, data analysis as well as some advanced statistical techniques. This will be taught through lectures and pc-tutorials and will be assessed through a written exam. In the second part of the course (weeks4-8), students will work on one specific environmental theme and get experienced with associated research methods. Data collection will take place in the catchment area of the Gelderse IJssel and around Wageningen. The data analysis will be done using the techniques that have been taught in the first part of the course.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:

  • explain relevant environmental statistical techniques;
  • apply selected statistical techniques in addressing environmental problems;
  • design and carry out strategies for data collection;
  • apply research methods, depending on the selected theme;
  • analyse collected spatial and temporal environmental data;
  • explain, interpret and present the obtained research results.

Teaching method and examination

The assessment is composed of two parts. (Both parts must be finished with a grade >=5.5) :

  • written exam (closed book) for the theoretical part (50%);
  • presentation and defense of the thematic part (50%).
