Drawing on insights from the field of sustainability transitions, innovation sciences and STS (Science and Technology) studies, Managing Sustainable Technology course introduces students to the possibilities and constraints of how societies can manage innovations.  
Given the limitations of product and process innovations in dealing with grand societal challenges such as climate change, poverty or social inequalities, this course focuses on innovation from a system perspective. System perspective implies consideration of not only technical but also societal, institutional, political, economic and other factors. Introduction of technological novelties that are e.g. more sustainable, requires therefore a fundamental change of all aspects that facilitate the use of that technology by the society incl. established infrastructure, markets, policies, culture, practices as well as dealing with the vested interests of a variety of societal actors.  
Because of its radical and long-term character, as well as normative orientation towards sustainability, such a change, often termed a transition or transformation, is not an easy task. Stimulating and managing it requires novel, reflexive approaches that recognise the importance of: experimentation, multi-actor collaboration, establishment of a robust and shared vision, social learning and new ways of doing business.  
A number of such reflexive approaches have been developed to manage complex technological change from a systemic perspective. During the course, the approaches will be discussed and applied to simple practical cases. Wherever applicable, the approaches will be coupled with analytical perspectives to allow better insight in the analysed cases.  
​We will also problematise the relationship between science, technology and public policy-making. Thereby we challenge the conventional assumption that their relationship is merely that of science speaking truth to state power, or in turn, that public policy-making is merely about adding moral and political values to objective expertise.

Managing sustainable technology

Blok 4

We live in a world where scientific and technological artifacts are deeply embedded in nearly every aspect of life. To create sustainable innovations, it is essential to understand that innovation cannot be separated from its societal context. This course builds on the principle that technology and society co-construct each other and uses theoretical frameworks to explore this dynamic through the analysis of real-life sustainable and/or energy technologies.Within groups, students mobilize theoretical frameworks on innovation, sustainability, and technology-society interaction to analyze challenges faced by sustainable and energy technologies in society. Groups of students work on different challenges related to socio-technical systems such as energy, ICT, housing, water, or mobility. Challenges are linked to students based on their interest and, if applicable, to the learning lines they are following. For instance, students taking this course as part of an energy learning line will be placed in a group working on an energy related challenge. Each group must select theoretical concepts and frameworks to analyze their specific challenge. Based on these insights, students compose policy and strategy recommendations and critically reflect on the agency of different actors in managing sustainable and energy technologies in society.  


During the course, groups of students learn how to work independently on a real-life sustainability challenge, supported by regular supervision. Planning, collaboration and visual thinking and communication skills are essential and will be strengthened through an introduction lecture, workshops, group meetings, peer feedback, a group work plan, and reflection activities. Insights gained during the course will be consolidated and presented during mid-term and final presentations to fellow students, clients, and tutors, and in a final poster and report that communicates ideas clearly and in an engaging way.

Managing sustainable technology challenges in practice

Blok 3

We live in a technological world. In our everyday life we use technologies all the time when we cook, communicate and travel. Businesses cannot operate without technologies. Governments are also much concerned with technologies and innovation, e.g. as a problem solver for sustainability challenges, as engines of economic growth or as potential sources of major risks. In the learning line *Technology in Society*you develop a deep understanding of the interrelationship between technologies and their social and economic context. Challenging and enlightening cases are discussed, in particular from the field of sustainable innovation. Different perspectives from the field of Sustainability Transitions and Science and Technology Studies (STS) are offered to understand and govern these cases and relationships. These include among others large technical systems theory, actor-network theory, social construction of technology, sociotechnical scenario’s, strategic niche management and the multi-level perspective.  
  
As an introductory course to the learning line *Technology in Society*, 0SV10 introduces students to  
(1) basic concepts and theories about society (such as: social groups, stakeholders, progress, moral values, etc.);  
(2) the intertwinement of sustainable innovation with social, political and ethical issues (basic introduction to the discipline of STS);  
(3) the holistic study of innovation as a sociotechnical process in a specific time, place, and stakeholder setting (students learn to 'follow the process');  
(4) tensions and controversies between stakeholders and ways how to analyze them;  
  
0SV10 introduces these issues by means of exemplary contemporary and historical real-life innovation cases. It combines lectures & readings with group assignments, in which student groups study a particular sociotechnical controversy.

Sustainable technology in society: introduction

Blok 2

A package is similar to a minor in that it offers a selected set of courses connected to the same theme/ topic. Unlike a minor, however, a package provides greater flexibility in terms of the total number of ECTS credits and the number of mandatory courses. Despite the use of the term &ldquo;mandatory courses&rdquo; below, you are not required to take all courses within the package. Instead, the package is designed to help you explore a topic in greater depth while allowing you to choose a combination of electives that best fits your interests and study program.  


In this package, we will unravel the mysteries of executing research properly, including knowledge about some basic and more advanced statistics, and hands-on experience with dealing with quantitative data. Are you curious as to how to find meaning in a heap of data? Or how to lie with statistics? This is your chance.  


It is strongly recommended to follow a logical progression when selecting courses within this package. &ldquo;Behavioral Research Methods 1: Designing research&rdquo; serves as the introductory course, while &ldquo;Behavioral Research Methods 2: Dealing with data&rdquo; is an intermediate course that build on this foundation. Finally, &ldquo;Behavioral Research Methods 3: Tricks of the trade and research ethics&rdquo; is an advanced course.
