Over deze cursus
This course is part of specialisation (verdiepingspakket) Ethics and Politics.
For students who study LAS and TCS and take this course as part of their major, a mandatory preparation is required. See https://tcs.sites.uu.nl/. Metaethics is an advanced subject in philosophy, requiring knowledge of developments in normative ethics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language and metaphysics. This course is not open to students who have not taken an introduction to ethics. As preparation, we recommend also taking courses in normative ethics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language.
Metaethics is about what people do and commit to when they make moral judgements and try to justify them. In other words, it is the area of ethics that concerns itself with the semantic, ontological, psychological and epistemological dimensions of moral statements. This module is a general introduction to metaethics. Students will become familiar with metaethical terminology, the most prominent metaethical positions, and central texts and arguments that have defined the field.
