Human Resource Management

ELS57206

About this course

Achieving organisational goals cannot be done without people, ‘human resources’. Successful innovation, change, transformation and transition in organisations depend to a large extent on human effort. ‘Management’ of human resources is critical for getting results but not at all easy to do. Mismanagement or lack of attention for human resources can cause serious problems for organisations, such as lack of motivation, conflicts, and high levels of external mobility. The costs of these kinds of problems, in emotional and financial terms for instance, can be very high.
As a university graduate, you will always be engaged in human resource management (HRM), implicitly or explicitly. For example through selection of employees (or being selected), defining duties and tasks for employees, thinking of compensation, designing assessment standards, resolving conflicts, making or agreeing with labour contracts, either by yourself or in cooperation with HRM specialists. The course will link these types of practical problems to theory.

Learning outcomes

With this course we aim to learn you how to signal, analyse and solve HR related problems in work settings and how to evaluate whether or not the solution you developed worked out the way you expected.
This means that after successful completion of this course studetns are expected to be able to:

  • show insight into various aspects of HRM and into the relationship between organisational strategy and management of ‘human resources’;
  • view HRM policy and practices from various theoretical perspectives;
  • show insight into possible roles of HRM in your future career;
  • analyse and develop solutions for human resource management problems.
