Basics of Immunotechnology

CBI21303

About this course

This course overlaps with CBI20803. Therefore, combining this course with CBI20803 is not allowed.
This course is aimed at students with an interest in the immune system. Each organism lives in constant contact with its surrounding environment and while it should remain tolerant towards harmless foods and bacteria, it should be able to mount an immune response towards harmful substances and pathogens. In this course, you will get a first introduction on the organs and cells that make up the immune system. How does it work ? How do different cells communicate ? How do we (and animals) stay healthy? Furthermore, we will go into the immune processes that are involved in homeostasis and disease. This course will be the basic training for those students that wants to pursue a career in the medical biology and health domain (human or animal). This course will provide the basic knowledge needed for several advanced immunology courses such as Immuno-technology (CBI30806) and/or Human and Veterinary Immunology (CBI30306).

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:

  • Explain the organization of the immune system and its development
  • Describe the concepts of innate and adaptive immunity and their communication
  • Explain processes underlying infection and inflammation
  • Identify and apply the first concepts of independent lab work based on scientific publications. (e.g. set-up protocol, optimize protocol, prepare experiment and reagents, writing lab journal)
  • Perform basic immunological assays in a laboratory and describe several imaging techniques
  • Create and present a scientific poster
  • Analyse data from an obtained experiment
