About this course

This course is designed to equip students with an overview of a wide variety of manufacturing processes and systems. The fundamental principles of manufacturing processes will be discussed, and models will be introduced to analyze the relationship between the process parameters and production output. Integrated manufacturing systems will be discussed. Because of digitization and automation, the manufacturing industry is rapidly changing. The course also covers recent trends in the digital and green transformation of manufacturing.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Introduction to manufacturing; mechanical and physical properties of engineering materials.
  • Solidification processes
  • Bulk deformation processes and sheet metal working
  • Machining processes and economics
  • Additive manufacturing
  • Semiconductor manufacturing
  • Integrated manufacturing systems (assembly lines, cellular manufacturing systems, flexible manufacturing systems)
  • AI-applications for smart industry

Learning outcomes

After this course the student is able to:

  • Describe the fundamental principles behind the traditional and modern manufacturing technologies.

  • Explain widely-used manufacturing processes and systems as well as recent technological developments in manufacturing industry.

  • Distinguish the properties of different engineering materials within the context of manufacturability.

  • Choose appropriate manufacturing processes and develop quantitative models to optimize certain parameters in manufacturing processes.

  • Be familiar with integrated manufacturing systems and AI-based control & planning tools for manufacturing operations and logistics.
