Teaching and Training Skills I

ELS59303

About this course

This course focuses on the development of both teaching and training skills. These skills are necessary for preparing, delivering and/or facilitating presentations, colloquia, workshops, and other learning activities. In this course we discuss various education-related themes, such as developing a lesson plan and your role as a teacher. Each week a theme is discussed and brought into practice by means of in-class (group) assignments. As such, the course has a practical character and all we do is meant to translate right away to the real-world teaching/training practices (while staying in our own classroom). The course is interesting for students who like to explore what the field of teaching is about and/or if teaching/training would be something for them to do in the future - whether this is in formal education or beyond. We would like to stress the words '..or beyond' here, because the course could be also interesting for students that are interested in speaking to/providing sessions for professionals in business contexts, OR students that consider future work in the field of informing people about a certain topic (e.g. related to sustainability).

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:

  • Recognize the three main teaching and training methods: frontal sessions, interactive sessions and activating sessions
  • Describe the six different roles of a teacher/trainer irrespective of the context in which this teacher/trainer performs the role
  • Develop a basic lesson plan existing of a proper start, core and ending (including a small assessment)
  • Demonstrate presenting a frontal session by applying it to an educational topic of choice
  • Legitimize the lesson plan by (1) referring to the characteristics of the type of lesson taught, by (2) your role(s) as a teacher/trainer, (3) the way you deal with individual differences.
  • Apply the lesson plan by teaching it in the format of a workshop, and take into account (1) the activating character of a workshop, (2) the different roles of a teacher, (2) the individual differences between learners
