About this course
This course offers students a theoretical background in the domain of education and learning at an introductory level. The course focuses on education and learning in formal education settings (and less on organizational contexts). We will discuss fundamental themes, and put education and learning in a societal perspective. Students are expected to apply the teaching and learning theories in assignments that will be discussed in the course.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- Describe essential theories regarding the function of education in society, learning theories, student motivation, teacher learning, and inclusivity in education
- Connect/Transfer these essential theories to example cases discussed in class
- Evaluate an educational case and form your own opinion on this case by formulating a stance
- Substantiate your opinion of this case with arguments grounded in scientific literature, and criticize the common approach
- Present your stance in a convincing way, connecting your message to an education-minded audience (peers).

It is recommended to first follow course ELS59303 Teaching and Training Skills I.
