Advanced planning and scheduling systems

1CM150

About this course

Improving supply chain planning and scheduling often involves the use of Advanced Planning and Scheduling systems. The design and implementation of such systems requires an APS specific approach, as many projects are not (completely) successful in practice. When applied correctly, APS systems can generate large operational savings and improve service levels at the same time. The APS needs to fit the human planner/scheduler, the physical system to be controlled and the organizational context. Attention will be given to the characteristics of various types of APS systems, the structure of models, how to apply mathematical modelling and optimization, and how to make sure the projects are carried out successfully.

Learning outcomes

  • Students understand what an APS is: a) the basic components and modules, b) its relation to other Enterprise Management Systems, c) what the typical drivers are for APS implementation
  • Students understand what type of APS-es should be used for which type of production control problems
  • Student understand the basic components of an APS model and how this varies for different environments (e.g. jobshop vs semi-process)
  • Students understand the design criteria that should be applied (autonomy, level of support, transparency, user interface)
  • Students know the typical phases of an APS implementation and what are the characteristics of every phase
  • Students understand the different modeling paradigms that underlie APS engine logic and when to apply what paradigm
